Testimony Needed for Annual Legislative Hearing
The Social Policy Committee will hold its Seventh Annual Legislative Hearing at the Catholic Charities USA Annual Conference, in Detroit. The Hearing will provide Catholic Charities USA members with an opportunity to share their experience and to offer suggestions on social policy initiatives. This year's Legislative Hearing is scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 8:30 a.m to 1:00 p.m.

Your testimony is needed to: (1) educate Annual Conference participants about local agencies' experiences and the related public policy implications; (2) help identify new issues for public policy advocacy; (3) help shape Catholic Charities USA's legislative priorities; and (4) clarify positions on issues.

Process:
  1. Contact Lucreda Cobbs to request the initial form and indicate which topic you are interested in testifying about.
  2. June 30, 2003 --Applications to testify due.
  3. July 15, 2003-- Invitations sent to those selected to present oral testimony.
  4. August 15, 2003 -- Written testimony due from presenters.
  5. September 13, 2003 - 8:30 am to 1:00 pm -- Oral testimony at annual conference in Detroit.

Since this year's Legislative Hearing will be only half as long as previous years, only half as many witnesses will be able to testify. Only witnesses who have applied to testify by June 30, 2003 will be able to present oral testimony at the Hearings. However, all testimony is submitted to the Social Policy Committee for consideration in selecting the 2004 Legislative Priorities.

All applications to testify in person will be considered under the following criteria: (1) whether the testimony raises new issues; (2) how the testimony is connected to the work of member agencies; (3) the severity and magnitude of the problem addressed in the testimony; and (4) the potential for federal legislative or regulatory solutions.

If you are interested in testifying at the hearings, please contact Lucreda Cobbs.
