2007 Catholic Charities USA Poverty in America Issue Session: Race and Poverty

Reverend Massingale Most Reverend Ramizer Reverend Williams

In 2006, Poverty in America – A Threat to the Common Good became the driving force for the launch of the Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America – calling for a reduction in poverty by 50 percent by the year 2020. It became clear that this well-written and widely-accepted document would become the foundation for deeper discussions around issues impacting the poor in our nation.

This year, Catholic Charities USA invites you to join in the conversation about race and how it impacts those who are living in poverty in this country. We are presenting the membership with an issue brief – a document intended to start, enrich, and inform the conversation, compelling each of us to serve, educate, and advocate for programs and poli cies that will foster unity in our communities and eliminate race as an issue.

Our issue brief was authored by Reverend Bryan Massingale, in collabora tion with an editorial board representing a broad spectrum of our member ship. Father Massingale will join Most Reverend Ricardo Ramirez, Bishop of Las Cruces, NM for a conversation about race and faith.

Afterwards, Rev. Clarence Williams, CPPS, Ph.D., a noted authority on race relations with over 30 years experi ence, will facilitate a panel discussion about real-world experiences of living in a culture where race matters.

Awards LuncheonVolunteer of the Year Award Winners

Today we are pleased to pay tribute to some very special people working within the Catholic Charities USA network. It is a great honor to recognize the Catholic Charities USA’s 2007 National Volunteers of the Year – a family of dentists from Tucson, AZ, who provide vital dental care to low-income families in the Tucson community. Forty years ago, Sam Marascalco, DDS, helped originate a dental clinic at Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona. He still volunteers at St. Elizabeth’s Clinic today. This started a family tradition. Twenty years ago, shortly after Phil Mooberry, DDS, married Dr. Sam’s daughter, he too joined St. E’s as a volunteer dentist. The summer of 2006 brought Nick Mooberry, DDS, son of Dr. Phil, to St. E’s. Together, these three generations of dentists treat between 12 and 15 patients each month at the clinic and help some of the more complex patients in their own offices. Their work for the clinic does not stop at dental care. This family also provides leadership for the St. E’s annual golf tournament each May, raising more the $60,000 each year for dental equipment and supplies; works with various dental foundations and community groups to advocate for contribution; and recruits other volunteer dentists and hygienists. Congratulations Drs. Sam, Phil, and Nick!

Working closely with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Catholic Charities USA is privileged once again to present three outstanding programs in our network with the Family Strengthening Award. Each program demonstrates excel lent support of families and the communities in which they live. A check for $25,000 will be given to each program, recognizing their ground-breaking efforts. Learn more at the workshop (4B) offered this afternoon by staff members of the winning programs.
